WHAT’S NEW THIS YEAR?
A NEW RACE! With
the aim of showcasing our beautiful area as a runner’s paradise
(ok it’s a skier Mecca too, but not in August) we’ve added a
rare Sunday race, and dubbed it the “Sinner
Six”…a 10k the morning after the marathon/half marathon.
This fun run sponsored by Maxwell’s East Coast Eatery on
the Plaza is a benefit for our NEW CHARITY PARTNER! We’ve
teamed up with the Falcon Flyers after school program for
elementary school aged kids, and will begin a running program in
the spring for the fifth graders. Proceeds from the
Sinner Six race go toward
running shoes and clothing, and for a part-time coach for these
kids. They will work on a “progressive marathon” with the goal
of finishing their last mile on race day, and coming across the
finish line with their proud parents cheering them on. Mentors
for the program step up from our new
PARK CITY RUNNERS CLUB, which started in the spring of
2009. MARATHON WALKERS: please note that if you are
planning on walking the marathon there is only one start time--
5 AM, and you must finish by 1 PM. This is a brisk walking pace.
HALF MARATHON WALKERS don't start at 5 AM; they can
simply start at the back of the second wave soon after 6:50 AM.
Shopping and Dining The
start/finish area is on the Newpark Sundial Plaza at Kimball Junction, with a
nearby array of restaurants and unique shops. Maxwell’s restaurant on the Plaza
will serve an all-you-can eat pasta dinner during packet pickup on Friday night.
See the menus and great prices. In the Newpark/Redstone area there are also
numerous restaurants featuring every type of cuisine imaginable. So, enjoy an
early night out prior to the race, or celebrate afterward ...and spectators,
spend the morning perusing the book store, toy store, art gallery and many other
specialty shops while you're waiting for your loved one. Read a Sunset Magazine
article about shopping near the race start area. Race Morning breakfast: Good
Thymes restaurant, downstairs from the Newpark Hotel and directly adjacent to
the start line, will serve a simple, race-worthy breakfast from 5:30-6:30 if at
least 30 participants so desire a meal at that time. If you're interested,
please email us. Good Thymes will also be serving
their regular full breakfast menu from 7 AM.
Host Hotel
Newpark Resort and Hotel
is proud to be the Official Lodging Partner for the Park City Marathon. Newpark Hotel
is conveniently located within steps of the start/finish line, and within
immediate walking distance to grocery stores, restaurants, shopping, and
entertainment. Newpark Hotel
is new and features 1 and 2 bedroom Luxury Suites (with full kitchens,
private hot tubs and panoramic views of all three Park City ski resorts) or
Deluxe Rooms with luxury bedding and comfortable layouts. Amenities include

Course Description
Start time is 6:30 AM for the
Marathon. This unique, scenic alpine loop course starts out from
the Newpark Plaza and onto Highland Drive. A quick right/left at
1.5 miles puts the runners through the gentle upgrade of the
Trailside residential area and past Trailside school/park. At
this point the runners move onto paved and then gravel bike
paths before getting back onto Highland Drive. Rolling downhill
for approximately 1 mile, runners then turn right (tiny bit
rough here, watch your footing) and through the first tunnel of
the course, which goes under the highway and onto the quiet
paved road which terminates at the Historic Rail Trail. Runners
then turn right and proceed along the smooth gravel Rail Trail
for approximately 7 miles of gentle upgrade (2%), past open
grazing land (yes, sometimes there are cows on the path) and
beaver ponds. There is one road crossing in this section, manned
by Utah Highway Patrol. The Rail Trail welcomes the runners into
Park City with paved/gravel pathways. Upon crossing Bonanza
Drive, runners will continue the upward trend on the paved
Poison Creek Trail (a remnant of our mining history) through
City Park. Look to your right for great views of some 2002
Olympic ski runs. Traversing several short tunnels (one painted
with a mural depiction of Park City's mining heritage), the
runners head to the Snow Park Lodge at Deer Valley (the course
high point) before looping back to the Poison Creek Trail. Here
the course turns west and guides runners through a fun section
which has them running down the middle of an open shopping mall,
a pedestrian bridge over Main Street, and across a skier bridge.
A short, steep uphill 'blip' puts runners at the top of Empire
Avenue and the start of the mostly downhill cruise to the
finish. Runners will be on quiet city streets as they head past
Park City Mountain Resort, along rolling hills near the
municipal golf course, and back onto a paved bike path which
takes runners to the historic McPolin barn depicted on our logo
and finisher t-shirts. Another tunnel, some wood plank bridges
over the pristine wetlands of the Swaner Nature Preserve
and a paved bike path return to Newpark Plaza--it's pretty
enough to (almost) want to do it again!
The half marathon will start at 6:45
AM from Newpark Plaza with an informal two-wave start, with the
second wave going out five minutes after the first. Most of the
route follows paved and gravel bike paths. The out-and-back
design takes runners on the last six miles of the Marathon
course. After looping once through Newpark, the course turns
south toward Park City and climbs gradually as it passes Swaner Nature Preserve,
winds through quiet neighborhoods and open space, and follows
McLeod Creek path with its plank bridges, beaver ponds and aspen
stands. The course then goes under Highway 224 via a tunnel,
past the McPolin barn shown on our logo and finisher t-shirts,
and continues on a gentle uphill trend through quiet residential
areas. The turn around point is near Rotary Park, and after
that, it's back the same way—and a gentle downhill through the
spectacular scenery and beautiful trails.
Sinner Six 10k (Sunday, August 22,
2010)
This inaugural costume-encouraged race starts at 7 AM from the
Newpark Plaza. Dress up as your idea of a Sinner (please, no
nudity!) and have some fun in this limited-entry race, a fairly
flat loop course through the bike paths and quiet streets south
of the Plaza.
Registration
Only online registration is accepted. To reduce waste we don’t
offer paper registration.
The Making of a “Green” event
We continue to evolve as an Earth-friendly race, and hope that you’ll join us in our efforts!
What we’re doing:
recycling
of plastic containers and paper cups (16,000!)
locally made glass finisher medals and awards
reusable water containers for aid stations, rather than disposable
loop course means no shuttle, less CO2
emissions
used shoe
drop at finish line, taken to recycling center for re-use
online registration, not paper
souvenir reusable race bag, not plastic
course escorts and medical personnel on bicycles, not race vehicles
host hotel located at start/finish, no need for cars
tyvek race bibs and pins can be recycled; bins at finish line. We are using Waste Management's recycle program
www.RecycleTyvek.wm.com
leftover food donated to local charity
What you can do:
Meet new runner friends! Use
pickuppal.com to arrange a ride share on race morning from the Wasatch Front.
People interested in ride sharing or carpooling are invited to sign up for a PickupPal account and become members
of a growing and dynamic community. It is free to join and to use. On the site members can post routes as passengers and/or drivers, they can complete a profile, upload a photo.
Within their account, PickupPals can track the number of rides they have given or taken, the number of miles they have traveled via ride sharing and Park City Marathon can keep track of the amount of emissions we have all reduced as a result. See it yourself,
click here to go to the website.
Consider carrying your own water bottle during the race,
and fill as necessary at aid stations. More consistent
hydration, and reduces the number of paper cups used.
Feed Farmer Lambert's pigs!
 |
Our green efforts have gotten a pink mascot~ All food scraps will be collected on the plaza and donated to a pig
farm in nearby Kamas UT...bagels and cream cheese, fruit, chocolate
milk. Unused food will be donated to the local domestic violence
shelter. In fact, there's not much we're not recycling or reusing at our race,
so please, before you toss it in the trash, is it something we can
reuse or recycle? Cups, cans, plastic water bottles, Hammer Gel and
ProBar wrappers, half-eaten fruit or bagels, your bib, your safety
pins, your old shoes...see the recycling station on the plaza to do
your part! |
Recycle everything! There will be stations for shoes, bibs, safety pins, plastic etc at the finish area.
Trail Shoes or Road Shoes? We'd use road shoes. Both courses offer varied surfaces, but there are only a couple of very short sections (200 feet) that could be described as off-road 'single track'. Most of the unpaved parts are uniform gravel. The marathon uses the historic Rail Trail (gravel) for six consecutive miles as it comes into town. After that, there is a stretch of 14 miles of either quiet paved streets or bike paths. The last six miles are a mix of paved bike paths and gravel paths. The Half Marathon utilizes the last six miles of the marathon course, so it's the same mix of paved trails, quiet paved streets, and gravel paths.
Triple Trail Challenge; It’s all about the jacket!
What started in 2006 as a lark for a few trail ‘crazies’ has evolved into a
dedicated core of runners who just can’t get enough of Park City’s 300+ miles of
trails. The Park City Half Marathon is the middle event of the series. Again
this year, the Park City Marathon and Mid Mountain Marathon are three weeks
apart rather than two, due to the timing of Labor Day weekend. So if you’ve
done this event before and you want to go for it, run the entire PC Marathon
and then the Mid Mountain Marathon three weeks later! Last year 15 people opted
for this “tough stuff” category.
Channel your inner Warrior with this three-event stage race over a six week period.
Register online through Mountain Trails Foundation, or at the first event:
August 7: Jupiter Peak Steeplechase (16
miles, from the Park City Mountain Resort to the top of
Jupiter Peak—10,000 ‘) YOU MUST REGISTER AND PAY FOR TTC
BEFORE YOU START THE RACE!
August 21, 2010: Park City Half Marathon
(or full
marathon, if you just can’t help yourself)
September:
11 Mid Mountain Marathon (a full
marathon distance on the Mid Mountain Trail, largely following
the 8,000’ contour) All
finishers will receive the signature fleece jacket, embroidered with your
accomplishment! Wear it with pride, and even a hint of superiority. More
information on www.mountaintrails.org
Directions and Parking
From the Salt Lake Valley, take I-80 Eastbound up Parley’s Canyon (signs say Cheyenne). At the Park City exit 145 (Hwy 224) at Kimball Junction, turn right at the off ramp and then left at the first traffic light
(Ute Blvd.) Go straight ahead 1/4 mile and park where directed. Warm
up prior to the race or pick up your bag in the Fieldhouse, 1388 New
Main St. see www.basinrecreation.org map.
IMPORTANT NOTE: the
start/finish area is NOT at the Fieldhouse! it is 500 feet to the
south (toward Park City), on the Newpark Plaza, a two minute walk. You
can stay warm in the Fieldhouse, and then we'll start calling runners
to the start line when it's time. Half marathoners, head to
the start line at 6:30 AM. Overnight guests staying at the
Newpark Hotel may simply leave their cars and walk to the start/finish area.
View map of the Start/Finish area.
Weather
Late August in Park City brings cooler
temperatures, and the first signs of fall: bright spots of color from the maple
and aspen trees. Although mountain weather is infinitely variable, early morning
on race day will probably be somewhat cool to start. Rain is very unlikely. Low
humidity in combination with an altitude of 7,000 feet necessitates especially
good hydration. If you are unused to either of these conditions, please consult
a training reference for hydration tips. Better yet, come a day or two early and
enjoy the beautiful surroundings as you acclimatize!
The average low
(nighttime) temperature in August is 50 degrees. The average high (daytime)
temperature in August is 80 degrees. source:

Aid Stations and Clothing Drops Marathon:
On the Marathon Course aid stations with water, Gatorade and runner supplies will be available at the following mileages: 2.4, 4.3, 6.2, 8.6, 10.4, 12.4, 13.2, 15.2, 16.8, 18.5, 20, 21.5, 23.1, 24.5. Hammer Gel energy packets (chocolate, vanilla and raspberry)
will be available at mile 10.4, 12.4, 15.2, 16.8, 20, 22, 22 and 24. The aid
station at mile 20 (McPolin Barn) is our ‘oasis’ stop, with yummy little sandwiches available too! There will be a clothing drop at the first aid station near Trailside school (mile 2.5). Please mark the clothing with your race number and we will do our best to get the items back to you at the "clothing corral" at the finish line. Portable toilets will be available throughout, and look for additional flush toilets in Trailside Park (mile 2.5) City Park (mile 14) Rotary Park (mile 19) and at the McPolin barn (mile 20). Food, drinks, and massages will be available at the finish of the race.
Half Marathon:
The half marathon course will have seven aid stations with water, toilets and Gatorade at each. At the turn around aid station (Rotary Park) at mile 6, there will also be Hammer Gel packets available. There will be a clothing drop at all first aid stations, and runners may reclaim their dropped items at the clothing corral at the finish area after 9:30 AM.
Please mark your clothing with your race number (on a piece of masking tape) so
it can be easily identified. You may also deposit items prior to race start at the clothing corral inside the Fieldhouse.
Sinner
Six: This course also starts at the Newpark Plaza, and makes
a loop through quiet residential streets or bike paths. This is
a ‘costume-encouraged’ run, but please observe the following:
costumes should not impede the runner’s movements, vision or
hearing. Participants are responsible for their costume choices.
Also, please keep it PG, there’s kids running this race! There
will be one aid station with toilets (another reason not to
have a fussy costume!)
Safety and
Limitations Our primary concern is the safety of all participants. There will be teams of medically trained personnel on bikes on the course, and race officials may require a participant to quit at any point during the race if they feel the racer is in severe physical or mental distress. All marathoners must complete the course in a maximum of 6-1/2 hours (1:00 PM).
Marathon walkers must start at 5 AM in order to finish by 1 PM. No exceptions! There are two checkpoints along the marathon course, with accompanying times. Any runner reaching these checkpoints after the cut-off time will be told that the time limit has been exceeded, and the runner will be driven in a comfy race vehicle back to the start/finish area. If a runner elects to continue against advice, he must turn in his runner bib, and will proceed at his own risk. Checkpoint 1: Aid Station # 9 , Deer Valley Drive, approximately mile 15. Must arrive not later than 10 AM. Checkpoint 2: Aid Station # 12, McPolin Barn, approximately mile 20. Must arrive not later than 12:00 noon. Weather related course changes: The Utah Road Runners, Inc., reserves the right to modify the start time, shorten the course or require an outright halt to the race at any time based on severe weather-related risks, including but not limited to lightning storms and extreme temperatures. In the unlikely event of this decision, no refunds will be issued.
Other prohibitions: Since much of the course is on eight-foot-wide gravel paths, no dogs (even on leash), baby strollers, bicycles, roller-blades or similar devices will be permitted during the race. Private support is also not allowed. The use of the above prohibitions will result in a disqualification. The course will not be closed to traffic. Runners must obey all traffic rules and regulations and will be subjected to the same traffic rules as other pedestrians.
A Word on
Bandits: Didn't register in time? Running unofficially with a
friend? We consider this stealing! All the registered
participants have paid for the course amenities that all cost
money. If you are running the race without paying, you are
stealing from everyone who has paid. Don't bring this bad Karma
upon yourself. If we see you without a bib number, we will sit
on you until the Sheriff arrives.
Walkers
We welcome walkers, but you must
adhere to these new requirements:
For your safety, there is only one
start time for marathon walkers-you may not start whenever you
like! All marathon walkers must begin at the walker start time—5 AM, no
exceptions! Please plan on starting with the rest of the walking
group leaving the official start line. In this way you will have
company in the dark, and you will get an official time. You must
still finish not later than 1 PM, which allows 8 hours.; a brisk
walk. If you don’t think you can walk the marathon in this time
frame, please do not enter. You should have a headlamp, your own
water and snack. It is likely that you will not reach the first
manned aid station until mile 8 or 2.5 hours. Porta-potties will
be in place prior to the early start. The 5 AM start time
for walkers is for the marathon only.. Half marathon walkers can
start at the back of the pack at 6:45 AM.
